The Outdoor Communicators Podcast Live
Episode Seven: Podcasting about podcasting
By Dan Dennison, Communications Director, Hawai‘i Dept. of Land and Natural Resources
For the second year in a row, attendees at the 2024 ACI conference in Arlington, VA were treated to a live recording of a podcast, the 7th episode of the ACI Outdoor Communicators Podcast. At the 2023 conference in Nashville, ACI members served as a live audience for the Tennessee Wildcast podcast. You can watch last year’s tips from podcasting vets in this unedited recording: https://vimeo.com/989298412 or a produced video feature: https://vimeo.com/735161042
Jason Harmon of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, and a host of the Tennessee Wildcast was one of the panelists this year, along with Emily McCabe of the Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries. Tim Akimoff, of the Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife moderated the session. He is a veteran podcaster as the host of the Beaver State Podcast and co-host of ACI’s The Outdoor Communicators Podcast.
My department is just entering the world of podcasting and I shared video of the 2024 podcasting session with staff who will be responsible for hosting and producing the Hawai‘i Conservation Kuleana podcast. We found the tips for success, the pratfalls and potholes to avoid when debuting a podcast, and discussion about what makes a great podcast and drives audience acceptance tremendously valuable.
